How to Remove a Computer Virus - Part 2

In Part 1 - How to Remove a Computer Virus, I said, you can't remove a computer virus.

Don't even try to. It is a total waste of time.

After your computer has been compromised, the only way to be certain that it is "clean" is to back up your data, reformat (erase) the hard drive and reinstall the operating system from a known good source.

There  is hope, however. Computer malware infections are much easier to prevent than they are to treat. Only one of the preventative measures costs any money.

How to Protect Yourself Against Computer Viruses

  • Use a Firewall. If you have a wireless router, or a wired router - you already have a firewall. A routers is a firewall. Here is how it works - when you are connected to the Internet, the internet is connected to you. One side of your router faces the internet, and the other side faces your computers on your internal network. If a computer on your internal network requests something from the internet, the router passes it through. All other traffic is denied. Your router prevents intruders from trying your "electronic doorknob," like a potential burglar would do in an apartment building. Routers cost less than $100.
  • Windows Updates. Turn on Automatic Updates in Windows. Microsoft regularly issues "patches" or fixes for bugs and security holes in Windows. The "bad guys" target computers that have not applied these patches.
  • Use Anti Virus Software. You don't need to pay for Anti Virus or Anti Malware software. There are some excellent free alternatives: Microsoft Security Essentials is free and written by MicrosoftAnother good, free Anti Virus is AVG Free Edition. A third free Anti Virus is Avast Home Edition. With three good, free choices it does not make sense to not have Anti Virus Software on your computer. Note: Only install ONE Anti Virus, running more than one will cause conflicts.
  • Do Not Open E-Mail Attachments. One favorite trick of virus writers is to send copies of the virus as an E-mail attachment. It works like this - your friend Fred, gets a virus on his computer. The virus sends copies of itself to everyone in Fred's address book as an attachment. Since you are in Fred's Address Book, you get an E-Mail from Fred and you click on the attachment. You now have the virus and it sends itself to everyone in your Address Book!
  • Do Not Click On Links In E-Mail. Another ploy that is frequently used is to send you an E-Mail with a link to a funny video, or a hot news story or a link to a Fedex or UPS package (that you are not expecting.) These tricks are known as"social engineering." If a "bad guy" cannot penetrate your defenses, he gets you to do it for him by using a ploy to trick you into dropping your guard. It only takes a few seconds to empty your bank account, or purchase a big screen TV, if the wrong person has your passwords and credit card info.

Infecting your computer requires, on some level, your participation. So the choice is yours - pay attention or pay to have your computer reformatted. The good news about this is that, you are not powerless. You can avoid having your computer compromised.

This is a good post with some great information however many technicians differ with you on the idea that you cannot remove viruses from an infected computer. Admittedly some viruses are more stubborn that others and my require an experienced tech, but that can be removed.

It’s a film called Hungry for You and it’s in pre-production now. I play the lead vampire. I didn’t want to be a vampire but was forced into it so I’m struggling with my vampire powers and not wanting to turn the girl I love into a vampire. The script is really great and has a wonderful storyline. It’s been fun. The creator, Linda Andersson, has a really cool comic strip of Hungry for You that she is going to release soon. It’s sort of a teaser and a way to start the marketing for the project in a bigger level.
